Real Life Meets NCIS

On the outside, NCIS may seem like any other popular crime show. If you take an in-depth look into the show, you will find that the writer’s include many hidden references to the personal lives of the characters. This can include references to previous careers, previous acting experiences, childhood experiences, and much more. Some of these references may be coincidences but most have been secretly hidden for only true NCIS fans to uncover.

Pauley Perette plays forensic specialist Abby Scuito. Before she began her acting career, she studied criminology. She may have continued on to a career in forensics just like her character on the show. Outside of the show, Perette is a member of the band, Fear. One of her songs can be heard in the finale of season 6. This song is part of the NCIS soundtrack. Also featured on the NCIS soundtrack is Cote De Pablo. De Pablo portrays Mossad Liaison Officer Ziva David on the show. In the opening scene of season 6, David is shown performing a song for a Moroccan audience while on an undercover mission for Mossad. This song is a cover of Tom Waits’ Temptation and is featured on the soundtrack. In her earlier career, De Pablo was an aspiring singer from Argentina. Unlike her character, she is not from Israel. Both of these women have not been referred to often throughout the show so hopefully the writers incorporate more into new episodes.

Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard, the chief medical examiner, is played by David McCallum. Although this has not been confirmed, the name, Dr. Donald Mallard, may be derived from Dr. Donald Duck. He was a doctor in Scotland where the character happens to be from.  In one specific episode, Special Agent Caitlin “Kate” Todd asked Special Agent Gibbs what Ducky looked like when he was younger. Gibbs replied, “Illya Kuryakin”. Illya Kuryakin was the character McCallum played on the popular show, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Who knows what other David McCallum references will be found.

Sean Murray embodies the role of Special Agent Timothy McGee on NCIS. In real life, Murray is the step son of producer, Donald P. Bellisario. Bellisario has stated that his choice for McGee’s character was not based on his relationship with Murray. He won the role because of his acting ability. McGee’s sister on the show is his actual step sister in real life.  All of the computers he is seen working on are all from Dell. They sponsor all of the computers shown on the show. Aside from being an NCIS agent, McGee is also a bestselling crime novelist. He used a pseudonym of his name on the show as the author of his novel (Thom E. Gemcity). The novel he wrote, Deep Six, is actually the title of a real novel by Clive Cussler. Maybe there will be more Sean Murray references in future episodes.

The role of Special Agent Anthony Dinozzo is played by Michael Weatherly.  In the show, Tony was cut off from his inheritance by his extraordinarily wealthy parents.  Michael Weatherly was also denied inheritance from his wealthy family. His parents did not approve of his choice of pursuing acting. In another episode, Dinozzo said, “I’ve got a better chance of hooking up with Jessica Alba than these guys do of infiltrating SeaLift.” In real life, Michael Weatherly had been engaged to Jessica Alba so you can infer that they have actually “hooked up”.  There are probably more Michael Weatherly allusions waiting to be found in numerous episodes.

Mark Harmon plays Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs on the show. During one of the episodes, Gibbs picked up a football and threw it back to a group of kids. This referred to his college football career. Before he became an actor, he was the quarterback for UCLA’s football team. Also, Gibbs is often seen working on a boat in his basement. Some of the tools he works with are his own personal tools. The shirts he wears in his basement are normally given to him by law enforcement agencies throughout the country.  In the opening credits for the first few seasons, a scene is shown where a boat is shown going under the Golden Gate Bridge. This scene is from the opening credits of The Presidio which starred Mark Harmon. Finally, when Gibbs was attempting to complete a crossword puzzle, he asked Special Agent Dinozzo for a television drama with eight letters. He answered by saying, “St. Elsewhere”.  Harmon played Dr. Bobby Caldwell on this series. NCIS fans should definitely be ready to find more Mark Harmon references in episodes to come.

The person who is referred to most throughout the episodes is not even a character. Donald P. Bellisario is the producer and creator of NCIS.  Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ character name is derived from his brother’s name (Leroy) and his father’s middle name (Jethro). Also, if you look closely at the most wanted wall on the NCIS set, you can see a picture of Bellisario. He made a cameo appearance in of the episodes as well. During one of the episodes, Tony Dinozzo mentioned that two of his favorite television shows were Airwolf and Magnum P.I. Both of these shows were created by Bellisario. The names of these shows can also be seen on lunchboxes inside of the victim’s homes in season 1. Many NCIS fans wonder what Donald P. Bellisario reference will come next.

USA Today said, “Beyond the characters, NCIS offers playful allusions about its cast.” This statement is absolutely true. These allusions allow viewers to do their own undercover research of the show. Deb Beauregard said, “I love how the writers integrate the references into the shows. It’s not forced and it fits perfectly into the show.” You’ll never know when the writers are going to add these allusions, and you might not catch them all. All in all, the references give viewers the chance to go on their own investigation into the lives of the NCIS cast.

As you can probably tell, I’m a big Once Upon a Time fan. I just really enjoy the characters. I think all the actors portray their parts perfectly especially Robert Carlyle and Lana Parrilla. I’m also a big fan of Gabe Khouth since he’s the coolest. I also really enjoy the writing. I love how all the drama is intertwined with sarcastic remarks and other comedic bits. There are however, a few things I would love to see in Once Upon a Time. It’s not much, but I would love to see it.

Not only am I a OUAT fan, I’m also a huge Disney fan. I love all the movies, but more so I love all the songs. I would absolutely love to see more Disney songs have their own cameos in OUAT. There have been a few so far, like the Seven Dwarfs humming Heigh Ho and Snow White humming With a Smile and a Song. I would love to see more music incorporated in this way. I love looking for the small details in shows and it makes watching episodes over more fun. MORE MUSIC PLEASE.

I would also like to see more Disney characters introduced in the show. I would love to see Aladdin, Rapunzel, Tinkerbell, Tarzan/Jane, Mowgli, and some Lion King reference. What would be absolutely amazing if they could somehow get one of the voice actors of one to the characters to play one of the characters on the show. Let’s get James Woods to play Hades, please. He already stared in Once Upon a Time in America. Close Enough. We could also try to get Scott Weigner to play Aladdin. If he looks familiar, you might know him as Steve from Full House. I can’t wait to see what characters we’ll meet next season and think it would be hilarious if one of the voice actors played their own character.
Like I said, I love the small details, I hope they make more allusions to other shows/Disney things. I love all the hidden Lost references and Disney ones. I think it would be cool if they reference the character’s personal lives as well. They have done this in NCIS before and I will write a post about this in the next few days. It’s really funny when you can pick out the references out of the dialogue. It makes you feel proud of yourself. Props to the writers for being awesome.

Well, that’s it for now. Please leave some comments. What songs/characters would you like to see next season? Anything please. Thanks!

I haven’t had much luck on twitter today, so I decided to use today’s post to talk about my questions for season 3 of Once Upon a Time. I am so excited for the new season. This show keeps getting better and better!

Question 1: Who did Cora actually kill instead of Archie? For the latter part of this season I have ben anxiously waiting to figure out who Cora actually killed, yet I don’t believe we ever found out. It’s not really important, but it had to be someone. I wonder if we’ll ever find out.

Question 2: When the gang heads through the portal on their quest to Neverland will they look the same or will they revert back to how they look in Storybrooke? Will Rumpelstiltskin look like a human or a monster. Will Regina and Snow have long hair or short hair? I’m personally hoping they look the same, but still have the flashbacks like previous seasons. Actually, now that I think about it. Snow looked the same when she and Emma went through the portal. I guess it’s Rumpelstiltskin who I’m most intrigued about then. I don’t know. Now, this seems like a dumb question but I wrote a lot so I’ll leave it.

Question 3: What will happen in Storybrooke now that all the main characters are gone. How will they react to them leaving them all there? Why didn’t they take everyone? Wasn’t that the initial plan? I didn’t really get that part. Also, how will they eventually gt back to Storybrooke? Rumbelle can’t be separated forever. A lot of people will be very sad.

Question 4: Is Captain Hook ever going to get a love interest? I mean Regina is single and Emma thinks her boyfriend is dead. That would add a nice little storyline when the find Neal alive… Hint. Hint. Hook is beautiful. All the women must be swooning over him. I know I am.

Question 5: How much are Aurora, Mulan, and Philip going to be on this season. Now, that Neal is with them, I’m guessing we’re going to learn about them. They’ll probably go on their own soul searching advernture… literally to find Philip’s soul. I’m hoping they’re focused on more. I really like those characters, especially Mulan and Philip.

That’s all I can think of now. I know I have a lot more and will probably think of one right after I post this. If you have any other questions or theories, feel free to post them. Answer any one of my questions too please!

So, here’s an update on my quest to learn the favorite colors of all 7 dwarfs on Once Upon a Time. I have currently gotten a reply from 5 of the 7 with 4 being favorite colors. Lee Arenberg (Grumpy) has replied to me while Michael Coleman (Happy), Faustino Di Bauda (Sleepy), Jeffrey Kaiser (Dopey), and Gabe Khouth (Sneezy). All of the actors are really nice when replying on twitter and most have had very created responses and/or have favorited my tweets. Gabe Khouth’s was my personal favorite and he seems like a really chill dude. I am still attempting to get replies from Mig Macario (Bashful) and David-Paul Grove (Doc). Will I ever learn all seven colors? The world may never know.

ImageOnce Upon a Time is easily one of my favorite shows. Luckily, the majority of the actors and actresses on the show are also on twitter. As much as I’d love a reply from all of them, I know that is not possible. One of my more realistic goals is to learn the favorite colors of all seven dwarfs on the show. So far, I have gotten replies by 4 of them with 3 telling me their favorite colors. I would highly recommend following them on twitter if you are not already. They all happen to be very nice and often give very interesting replies which I will go into detail on later. The seven dwarfs are played by:
Doc: David-Paul Grove (@DavidPaulGrove)
Grumpy: Lee Arenberg (@leearenberg)
Happy: Mike Coleman (@1MichaelColeman)
Sneezy/Mr. Clark: Gabe Khouth (@gabekhouth)
Bashful: Mig Macario (@MigMacario)
Sleepy: Faustino Di Bauda (@FaustinoDiBauda)
Dopey: Jeffrey Kaiser (@JeffreyEKaiser)

Howie Mandel Response!

Well, last night Howie Mandel responded to my favorite color question. In true comedic fashion, he responded with yes. Although I may be mistaken, yes is not a color. For example, my favorite color is green. Green is a color. Yes is an answer. In reality, responses like these are just as good as favorite colors. I got a reply and a joke. I guess that makes me a winner.
